Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has declared that the 2027 Abia State governorship election is not his current focus, emphasizing his commitment to delivering effective governance and legislative duties instead.

In recent statements, Kalu clarified that speculation about his political ambitions for the governorship seat remains premature. He stressed that his priority lies in contributing to national development through his role as Deputy Speaker, supporting the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and ensuring quality representation for his constituents in Abia. He added that any future political decisions, including potential contests, would be guided by his party (All Progressives Congress) and the will of the people, rather than personal declarations at this stage.

The remarks come amid ongoing political discussions in Abia State ahead of the 2027 elections, where Governor Alex Otti (Labour Party) is seen as a strong incumbent. Kalu has previously been linked to governorship rumors, including past comments urging Otti to join the APC and assertions that the Labour Party should "pray" he does not run. However, he has consistently denied formal declarations or active campaigning, dismissing such reports as speculative or politically motivated.

Kalu's office has previously refuted similar claims, stating in late 2025 that he had not announced any intention to run. His latest position reinforces a focus on service delivery over early electioneering, aligning with broader calls within the APC to prioritize reconciliation, party building, and governance in Abia.
