Once envisioned as Nigeria’s model “garden city” with rolling hills, protective green belts, and a meticulously crafted 1979 Master Plan, Abuja is rapidly transforming. Trees that once defined its landscape are disappearing at an alarming rate, replaced by concrete structures as the city grapples with explosive population growth and unchecked development. Satellite data reveals a stark trend: forest cover in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) declined by at least 15–20% between 2010 and 2023, with some dense patches nearly erased. Earlier analyses show an even more dramatic 61% reduction in canopy vegetation between 1987 and 2014, positioning Abuja among Africa’s fastest green-cover-losing capitals.
