FG Suspends New Shipping Tariffs, Directs Full Stakeholder Engagement
The Federal Government has intervened in the ongoing controversy surrounding recent increases in shipping and port charges, ordering an immediate suspension of all tariff adjustments across Nigerian ports. The Nigerian Shippers' Council (NSC), acting as the port economic regulator, issued a directive in January 2026 instructing shipping companies, shipping agents, and terminal operators to halt any review or upward revision of their charges. The move aims to prevent further disruption in the maritime sector amid protests from importers, freight forwarders, and clearing agents who argued that the hikes were imposed without adequate consultation.
