 Having watched President Bola Tinubu traipsing around London and Windsor with King Charles of the United Kingdom, I cannot help thinking that what we were seeing was TWO monarchs, not one…because, let’s face it: Tinubu has undermined the opposition in Nigeria so effectively that this country can no longer be accurately described as a democracy. As a matter of fact, Tinubu is much more powerful than the man who was born royal and comes from a long line of majesties but now has a purely constitutional and frankly subservient role. King Charles is more or less at the beck and call of elected UK politicians. And, to some extent, beholden to the great British public. He hosts who they tell him to host. He signs what they tell him to sign. He travels where they tell him to travel. He is obliged to be law-abiding. He has to respond respectfully if they ask searching questions about his finances.
