Tinubu: Nigeria’s Real King – More Powerful Than Charles, and We’re Paying the Price By Donu Kogbara

 Having watched President Bola Tinubu traipsing around London and Windsor with King Charles of the United Kingdom, I cannot help thinking that what we were seeing was TWO monarchs, not one…because, let’s face it: Tinubu has undermined the opposition in Nigeria so effectively that this country can no longer be accurately described as a democracy.

As a matter of fact, Tinubu is much more powerful than the man who was born royal and comes from a long line of majesties but now has a purely constitutional and frankly subservient role.

King Charles is more or less at the beck and call of elected UK politicians. And, to some extent, beholden to the great British public.

He hosts who they tell him to host. He signs what they tell him to sign. He travels where they tell him to travel. He is obliged to be law-abiding. He has to respond respectfully if they ask searching questions about his finances. And he was recently compelled to throw his brother, the former Prince Andrew, under a bus because his subjects were outraged by Andrew’s sleazy relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.

Tinubu, on the other hand, can do whatever he likes when he likes. Tinubu can spend whatever he wants to spend, and has transferred his household and office from the national grid to solar while Nigerian citizens suffer endless electricity outages and worry about how to feed themselves and pay basic bills.

Tinubu doesn’t have to answer to anyone. Bluntly put, Tinubu, his relatives and his cronies are pampered mandarins who are above the law, thanks to our weak judiciary, supine legislators, partisan “Independent” National Electoral Commission and other culprits.

And my message to the Nigerian People is this: If you are willing to let him get away with this imperial behaviour, we might as well quit investing trillions in the charade the upcoming election looks set to be and simply organise a coronation for King Bola and Queen Remi!!!
