Kano Police Arrest Three Suspects, Including Victim's Nephew, in Gruesome Murder of Housewife and Her Six Children
They Kano State Police Command has announced the arrest of three principal suspects in connection with the brutal murder of a 35-year-old housewife, Fatima Abubakar, and her six children at their residence in Dorayi Chiranchi Quarters, Kano metropolis.
The tragic incident occurred on Saturday, January 17, 2026, when unknown assailants invaded the home, leading to the deaths of the mother and her children. The victims were rushed to Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, where they were confirmed dead on arrival. The killings sparked widespread outrage and condemnation, with Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf describing the act as "barbaric" and immediately ordering a manhunt for the perpetrators.
Acting swiftly on intelligence-led operations, directed by Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun and supervised by Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, a team of crack operatives conducted a sting operation from 10:00 p.m. on January 17 to 4:00 a.m. on January 18, apprehending the suspects.
The arrested individuals are:
Umar Auwalu, 23, of Sabuwar Gandu Quarters (alleged leader of the syndicate and a nephew of the deceased housewife)
Isyaku Yakubu (alias ‘Chebe’), 40, of Sagagi Quarters
Yakubu Abdulaziz (alias ‘Wawo’), 21, of Sabon Gida Sharada Quarters
During interrogation, Umar Auwalu reportedly confessed to masterminding the attack and admitted that the syndicate had been involved in previous violent crimes, including the murder and burning of two housewives in Tudun Yola Quarters in November 2025.
Police recovered several incriminating items from the suspects, including four blood-stained clothes, two mobile phones belonging to the deceased, a cutlass, a club (locally known as gora), and an undisclosed amount of cash believed to have been stolen from the crime scene.
The Kano State Police Command, through Public Relations Officer CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, stated that investigations are ongoing to uncover the full motive, apprehend any additional accomplices, and link the suspects to other related incidents. The suspects are expected to be charged to court upon completion of the probe.
The command commended the officers involved and thanked residents for their cooperation and provision of useful intelligence. Authorities reassured the public of their unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property in Kano State, urging continued vigilance and support in the fight against violent crime.
This swift arrest brings some relief to a shocked community still mourning the loss of an entire family in what has been described as one of the most horrific crimes in recent memory in the state.
