Porto and Spain forward Samu Aghehowa has suffered a devastating anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in his right knee, effectively ending his chances of participating in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 21-year-old, born to Nigerian parents in Melilla, Spain, and who has Nigerian roots, sustained the injury during FC Porto's Primeira Liga match against Sporting CP on Monday, February 9, 2026. Aghehowa was substituted at half-time in the 1-1 draw after going down in first-half added time. Porto confirmed the following day that he had suffered a sprained right knee with an ACL injury, with reports widely describing it as a tear.

This season-ending setback comes at a cruel time for the talented centre-forward, who had been in exceptional form for Porto since joining from Atlético Madrid in August 2024. Aghehowa has scored 20 goals across all competitions this campaign (with some sources noting 13 in the league alone), establishing himself as one of the most prolific young strikers in Europe. Standing at 1.93m, his physical presence, finishing ability, and goal-scoring prowess had made him a strong contender for inclusion in Luis de la Fuente's Spain squad for the World Cup, set to begin on June 11, 2026, in North America.

Aghehowa, who debuted for Spain's senior team in November 2024 after representing the nation at youth levels—including winning gold with the U23 side at the 2024 Paris Olympics—chose to play for Spain despite eligibility for Nigeria. The injury, which typically requires surgery followed by 6–12 months of rehabilitation, will sideline him for the remainder of the 2025–26 season. Porto currently lead the Primeira Liga and are in the Europa League knockout stages, but they now face a major blow without their star No. 9.

The club stated: "Samu, who was substituted at half-time in the match against Sporting (1-1), suffered a sprained right knee with an anterior cruciate ligament injury. The Spanish international will be re-evaluated by FC Porto's medical department in the coming days."

Aghehowa has reportedly reacted emotionally to the news, thanking supporters for their messages of support amid what is a significant personal and professional setback.
