Anambra State Launches Crackdown on Drainage and Waste Violations — Fines Up to ₦5 Million

AWKA, Anambra State, Nigeria — The Anambra State Government has initiated a sweeping enforcement campaign targeting public and private buildings that flout environmental and urban planning regulations related to drainage systems and waste disposal, the state’s Commissioner for Information announced in a public notice on Thursday.

In a statement signed by Dr. Law Mefor, the government declared that full enforcement of existing environmental laws will begin immediately, focusing on structures without functional catchment pits, drainage systems or approved stormwater control measures. This move is intended to curb flooding, improve sanitation and promote environmental health across the state.

“Anyone caught dropping refuse indiscriminately on roads, expressways, or into drainages will be arrested, prosecuted, and fined,” the notice said, emphasising that the unlawful disposal of sachet water nylons, PET bottles, plastics and other waste outside designated points is strictly prohibited under state law.

The enforcement drive empowers authorities to impose stringent penalties: individuals found in violation may face fines ranging from ₦20,000 to ₦1,000,000, while corporate organisations could be liable for fines of up to ₦5,000,000.

Officials said the crackdown is part of a broader effort to prevent flooding, protect public health and enhance environmental sustainability in communities across Anambra. The state government urged residents, businesses and developers to comply with the standards to avoid sanctions and contribute to a cleaner, safer environment.

Environmental experts and urban planners have long pointed to poor drainage maintenance and indiscriminate waste dumping as major contributors to flooding and health hazards in the state, particularly during peak rainy seasons. The renewed enforcement aligns with ongoing initiatives by agencies such as the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA) Brigade, which has previously undertaken citywide clean-up and drainage clearing exercises.

As the campaign unfolds, authorities have warned that violations observed on inspection will be dealt with decisively, with prosecution and fines applied in accordance with state environmental laws.
