Igboho Urges Alaafin, Olubadan: End Feud Over Council Chairmanship, Prioritize South-West Insecurity"

The tension stems from the rotational chairmanship of the Oyo State Council of Obas, a body that brings together first-class traditional rulers in the state. Recent developments include:

Governor Seyi Makinde's alleged consultation on rotational arrangements (which the Alaafin's palace denied, stating no meeting or endorsement occurred).

A public incident at an inter-faith gathering (around January 12–13, 2026) where the Olubadan reportedly snubbed a handshake from the Alaafin, sparking widespread debate on hierarchy, protocol, and perceived rift.

Claims of non-consultation and disagreements over whether the chairmanship should rotate among top monarchs (Alaafin, Olubadan, Soun of Ogbomoso) or remain fixed, with some groups asserting the Alaafin's primacy is non-negotiable.

Igboho's Statement: In a release issued in Ibadan (reported prominently by Vanguard News on January 21, 2026, and echoed in outlets like The Nation, Guardian, Leadership, Punch, and Blueprint), Igboho described the feud as "unimpressive" and a waste of energy for prominent Yoruba traditional rulers whose stools are central to Yoruba history and evolution.

He urged the monarchs (and broader Yoruba leadership, including the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, and others like the Olugbon of Orile Igbon) to unite instead of dissipating energy on "ephemeral positions."

Priority should be given to tackling rising insecurity in the South-West, including banditry, terrorism, and criminal activities in forests. He referenced recent killings of guards in the Old Oyo National Park and attacks on rural farmers/communities.

Traditional rulers should act as agents of cohesiveness, harmony, and economic growth rather than promoting division amid threats to lives and livelihoods.
