The founder of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, has clarified that Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf resigned from the Kwankwasiyya Movement, not from the NNPP itself.

In statements reported by Vanguard and Punch Newspapers on January 24, 2026, Aniebonam emphasized the distinction: while Governor Yusuf and other political officeholders have distanced themselves from the Kwankwasiyya political movement—led by Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso—their resignation from the party platform (NNPP) is not formally known to him as the party's national leader.

The clarification addresses widespread reports of Yusuf's resignation from the NNPP on January 23, 2026, alongside 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly and other officials. Yusuf cited internal conflicts and a focus on citizen welfare as reasons for leaving the party, amid speculation of a potential defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Aniebonam maintained that the NNPP remains intact and operational, separating the ideological/movement aspects (Kwankwasiyya) from the formal party structure. This comes as Kwankwaso himself reacted strongly, declaring "I am not for sale" and warning against money-driven politics, while describing the exits as a betrayal of trust in some quarters.

The development highlights deepening rifts within Kano's political landscape ahead of future elections, with the Kwankwasiyya Movement—historically the driving force behind NNPP's successes in the state—facing fragmentation following Governor Yusuf's exit from its fold.
