MTragic Shooting in Port Harcourt: Police Inspector Kills Colleague, Injures Another

A shocking incident has rocked the Nigeria Police Force in Rivers State as an Inspector allegedly shot two of his colleagues on Sunday, January 18, 2026, resulting in the death of one officer and serious injury to another.

The suspect, identified as Inspector Victor Okus, attached to the 17 Police Mobile Force (PMF) but on special duty at Intels, Onne (and reportedly linked to a multinational logistics firm like Hintex Logistics in some reports), has been arrested by the Rivers State Police Command.

The incident occurred around 1:20 p.m. at the Next Cash and Carry Supermart in the Trans-Amadi area of Port Harcourt. The victims, Inspector Ibrahim Sani (who later died from his injuries) and Inspector Daniel Dauda (currently receiving treatment and reported stable), were both attached to the 14 PMF, Yola. They were on joint guard duty with military personnel at the location when the shooting took place.

According to the Rivers State Police Command spokesperson, CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, preliminary investigations and accounts from the Unit Commander of 14 PMF, DSP Turaki Hassan, indicate that Inspector Okus allegedly fired shots that struck his colleagues in the head and neck regions.

The injured officers were rushed to Nopsams (or Nobsams) Hospital in Trans-Amadi for immediate medical attention. Sadly, Inspector Ibrahim Sani succumbed to his wounds, while Inspector Daniel Dauda remains under medical care.

Some initial reports described the shooting as an "accidental discharge" due to negligent handling of a firearm, possibly while the officers were in a vehicle or during routine movement. However, official police statements have not confirmed the exact motive or circumstances leading to the shooting, describing it as under investigation.

Inspector Victor Okus has been detained and will face an orderly room trial before being charged to court, as confirmed by the Rivers State Police Command.

This tragic event has sparked calls among some observers for better firearm handling training, mental health support, and periodic assessments within the force.

The Rivers State Police Command has assured the public that justice will be served and urged calm while investigations continue.
