PDP Leadership Tussle Ends: Court Dismisses Samuel Anyanwu's Bid for National Secretary Role as Tenure Expires"

Anyanwu's lawyer, U. C. Njemanze-Aku (SAN), informed the court that the matter had been overtaken by events, as Anyanwu's tenure as PDP National Secretary expired in December 2025 (some reports specify November/December 2025). The plaintiff applied to withdraw the suit to avoid wasting court time. After submissions from respondents' counsel (including those representing PDP Acting National Chairman Ambassador Iliya Damagum, Sunday Udeh-Okoye, INEC, and others), Justice Umar dismissed the case outright (rather than striking it out), stating parties had "joined issues." No costs were awarded.

Background of the Dispute:

Anyanwu originally held the position but resigned in 2022/2023 to contest the Imo State governorship election (which he lost).

He attempted to reclaim the role post-election, leading to factional battles within PDP.

Lower courts (Federal High Court and Court of Appeal in Enugu, 2024) had earlier sacked him and affirmed Sunday Udeh-Okoye (South-East replacement) as secretary.

The Supreme Court in March 2025 set aside those judgments, ruling that internal party affairs (like secretaryship) were non-justiciable and courts should not interfere.

Anyanwu then filed this fresh suit in Abuja (last year) to enforce recognition, amid multiple claimants (including Udeh-Okoye and Setonji Koshoedo). The case saw amendments (with fines of N150,000 in May 2025 and N30,000 in November 2025 for delays) and adjournments.

The dismissal ends Anyanwu's legal push for the position, solidifying that he is no longer PDP National Secretary. It resolves (at least judicially) a prolonged factional crisis tied to the Wike vs. anti-Wike dynamics in PDP's South-East and national leadership. Udeh-Okoye or the current acting setup remains in place by default, pending any party convention or internal resolution.
