18-Year-Old Teenager Drowns in Open Water Body in Kano's Ungogo LGA

 

An 18-year-old resident, Yusif Malam-Gwani, has tragically lost his life after drowning in an open water body at Bachirawa, Kwanar Madugu, in Ungogo Local Government Area of Kano State.

The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon, prompting a swift response from the Kano State Fire Service following a distress call received from Sulaiman Abdullahi-Tela.

According to a statement issued by the Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, and signed by the Public Relations Officer, Alhaji Saminu Abdullahi, a rescue team was immediately dispatched from the agency's headquarters to the scene.

Despite the rapid deployment, the victim was recovered deceased from the water. His body was subsequently handed over to the Ward Head of Bachirawa Quarters, Jibrin Isah, for burial arrangements and family handover.

This unfortunate event coincides with another drowning reported on the same day in a separate location, where an eight-year-old boy, Abdussalam Ibrahim, fell into a well at Kofar Yamma in Karaye town, Karaye Local Government Area. The Fire Service also recovered that child's body and returned it to his father, Malam Musa-Mudi.

Alhaji Saminu Abdullahi emphasized the need for heightened vigilance, urging residents to exercise necessary safety precautions around open wells, unprotected water sources, and other potential hazards—particularly to safeguard children and young people who may be more vulnerable to such accidents.

The Kano State Fire Service extended its deepest condolences to the bereaved families and reiterated its commitment to rapid emergency response while calling for community efforts to prevent future occurrences through better awareness and securing dangerous water bodies.

Drowning incidents remain a recurring concern in parts of Kano State, often linked to open ponds, streams, wells, and unmanaged water channels during dry or rainy seasons. Authorities continue to advocate for fencing off risky areas and educating the public on water safety.
