2027: Igbo Presidency Project Mobilises 10 Volunteers Per Polling Unit Nationwide

 In a bold grassroots initiative aimed at reshaping Nigeria's political landscape, the Igbo Presidency Project (IPP) has launched a nationwide mobilisation drive to secure a president of Igbo extraction in the 2027 general elections.

National Coordinator of the IPP, Prince Chinedu Nsofor, announced the plan during the official unveiling of the campaign. The group intends to recruit and deploy 10 volunteers per polling unit across the country. These volunteers will engage in voter education, mobilisation, and advocacy to build momentum for an Igbo-led presidency.

According to Prince Nsofor, the initiative seeks to address what he described as the longstanding imbalance and marginalisation of the South-East geopolitical zone in Nigeria's leadership structure since independence. "Supporting an Igbo president is not just about equity for Ndigbo; it is about national healing, inclusivity, and true federal character," he stated.

The strategy focuses on Nigeria's extensive polling unit network—over 176,000 units nationwide—making it a highly decentralised, community-driven effort. Volunteers are expected to work at the most basic level of electoral participation: educating voters, encouraging registration, and promoting the cause during campaigns and on election day.

This move comes amid heightened discussions on zoning and rotational presidency ahead of 2027. While some Igbo socio-cultural groups and figures have previously backed candidates like Peter Obi (Labour Party's 2023 flagbearer), the IPP's approach emphasises broad-based, non-partisan advocacy for the principle of an Igbo president, regardless of specific candidates at this stage.

The announcement aligns with other recent efforts in the South-East, including voter registration drives and political charters by groups like the Igbo Agenda Dialogue (IAD), which aim to galvanise millions of Igbo voters nationwide.

Critics, however, argue that such ethnic-based campaigns could deepen divisions, while supporters view it as a legitimate push for justice and representation in a multi-ethnic federation.

The IPP has called on Igbo communities, allies across Nigeria, and well-meaning Nigerians to join the volunteer network. As preparations for 2027 intensify, this polling unit-focused strategy could prove pivotal in grassroots political organising.
