Bandits Kill 10 in Deadly Raid on Kwara Villages, Torch Homes in Renewed Terror

 

Armed bandits launched a ferocious attack on the rural communities of Woro and Nuku in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State on Tuesday evening, killing at least 10 residents and setting numerous houses ablaze in what locals describe as a coordinated and devastating assault.

Eyewitness accounts and community leaders report that the gunmen, suspected to have originated from forest hideouts in the nearby Borgu National Park in Niger State, stormed the villages around 5-6 p.m. They moved methodically from house to house, firing indiscriminately and igniting residential buildings, leaving families grieving and properties in ruins.

A local source confirmed to reporters that approximately 10 people lost their lives in the violence, with many others fleeing into surrounding bushes for safety. Several homes were completely razed, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the already vulnerable border region.

The attack comes amid ongoing security operations in parts of Kwara State, including recent military efforts to flush out bandit camps. Some residents and officials link the assault to retaliatory actions by terrorist elements frustrated by these counter-insurgency gains.

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq swiftly condemned the incident, describing it as a "cowardly expression of frustration" by criminal groups. In a statement issued late Tuesday, the governor expressed deep sorrow for the victims and assured that he was personally monitoring developments while security forces intensified efforts to restore calm.

"The governor has conveyed heartfelt condolences to the affected families and communities in Woro and Nuku," the statement read. He emphasized that the state government remains committed to collaborating with federal security agencies to dismantle bandit networks operating along interstate borders.

This latest tragedy has heightened fears in Kaiama LGA, a region long plagued by banditry, kidnappings, and sporadic violence spilling over from neighboring states. Community leaders have renewed calls for stronger military deployment, better intelligence sharing, and sustained operations to prevent further incursions.

As recovery efforts begin, displaced residents face immediate needs for shelter, food, and medical care. Authorities have yet to release an official casualty update or details on any arrests, but the incident underscores the persistent challenge of rural insecurity in Nigeria's North Central zone.
