Bayelsa State Assembly Confirms Pastor Peter Akpe as New Deputy Governor

 

The Bayelsa State House of Assembly has officially confirmed the nomination of Pastor (Hon.) Peter Pereotubo Akpe as the new Deputy Governor of the state. The approval came during a plenary session on Tuesday morning, paving the way for his imminent swearing-in ceremony.

Governor Douye Diri nominated Dr. Akpe, his former Chief of Staff at Government House, to fill the vacancy left by the untimely death of the previous Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Oborawharievwo Ewhrudjakpo, who passed away on December 11, 2025.

Lawmakers unanimously endorsed the nomination after due consideration, describing Akpe as a seasoned administrator and politician with deep roots in Bayelsa’s public service. The confirmation ends months of speculation and suspense following the former deputy governor's demise.

Dr. Akpe, an ordained pastor with the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), brings a wealth of experience to the office. He previously served as a two-term member of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly from 2011 to 2019, where he held the position of Majority Leader. Earlier in his career, he was Commissioner under the administration of former Governor Seriake Dickson between 2008 and 2011.

A native of Ebedebiri community in Sagbama Local Government Area—the same area as his predecessor—Akpe also worked in the civil services of both Rivers and Bayelsa states before transitioning fully into politics. His appointment is seen by many as ensuring continuity and stability in the Diri administration's governance agenda.

The position became vacant under Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), prompting Governor Diri to forward Akpe's name for legislative screening and confirmation. With the assembly's approval secured, attention now shifts to the formal swearing-in, expected soon, which will officially usher him into office as Bayelsa’s second-in-command.

Political observers note that Akpe’s background in both faith leadership and legislative/executive roles could bring a unique blend of moral guidance and administrative expertise to the deputy governorship. His confirmation has been welcomed by supporters as a strategic move to strengthen the administration amid ongoing development efforts in the oil-rich but ecologically challenged state.

This development marks a new chapter for Bayelsa State, as the government moves forward with its Prosperity Government agenda under Governor Diri.
