Florida Legislature Approves Renaming Palm Beach International Airport to President Donald J. Trump International Airport

Florida's Republican-controlled House of Representatives passed the measure (HB 919) on Tuesday with an 81-30 vote, largely along party lines. The state Senate followed on Thursday (February 19, 2026), approving it 25-11, with all opposition coming from Democrats. The bill renames the airport President Donald J. Trump International Airport.

The legislation now heads to Governor Ron DeSantis for his signature—he is widely expected to sign it into law, despite past political tensions with Trump. However, the name change is not final: it requires approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which oversees airport naming and designations for air traffic control purposes.

The airport, located in West Palm Beach, serves as a major hub in South Florida and is frequently used by Trump for travel to and from his nearby Mar-a-Lago estate.

The Trump Organization recently filed trademark applications for variations of the name (including "President Donald J. Trump International Airport," "Donald J. Trump International Airport," and "DJT" as a potential airport code) to protect the brand. The company has stated it will not charge any royalties or fees for this specific renaming.

The bill also includes provisions preempting local governments from naming major commercial airports, centralizing that authority at the state level.

Democrats opposed the change, citing concerns over costs (estimated in some reports at up to $55 million for signage, updates, and related changes), potential conflicts of interest, and Trump's personal conduct.
