Fresh Horror in Benue: 7 Dead, Many Injured as Gunmen Kill 5 in Community Raid and Abduct 14 in Highway Ambush"

Benue State has been rocked by two deadly attacks in quick succession, leaving at least seven people dead and several others injured or missing, according to local authorities and eyewitness accounts.

In the first incident, suspected armed herdsmen stormed the Entekpa community in Adoka, Otukpo Local Government Area, unleashing gunfire that claimed five lives on the spot. Many residents sustained gunshot wounds and were evacuated to nearby hospitals for urgent care. The local government chairman condemned the assault, noting the attackers inflicted widespread damage before fleeing.

Hours later, along the Utonkon–Ojapo/Okpoga route in Okpokwu LGA, gunmen ambushed a commercial vehicle transporting passengers from Oju and Obi LGAs toward southwestern Nigeria. The attackers killed two passengers outright—one reportedly shot before the driver could stop—and abducted 14 others. A second victim succumbed to injuries at the scene.

The attacks have heightened fears among residents and travelers in the region, where insecurity has escalated in recent months due to banditry, kidnappings, and recurring clashes over land and grazing rights.

Benue State Police Command is yet to issue a detailed official statement on the latest developments, but security sources indicate patrols have been intensified in affected areas. Governor Hyacinth Alia and relevant agencies have been urged to bolster response efforts to curb the violence.

This comes amid a broader pattern of insecurity in north-central Nigeria, with communities calling for urgent federal intervention to restore peace and protect lives.

The identities of the victims are being withheld pending family notifications, and investigations are ongoing.
