Jill Biden's Ex-Husband Indicted for First-Degree Murder in Wife's Death

According to the New Castle County Police Department, a grand jury indicted Stevenson on February 2, 2026, alleging he "intentionally caused the death" of Linda Stevenson. He was taken into custody at his home on Monday without incident and is being held at the Howard Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington after failing to post $500,000 cash bail.

The incident dates back to December 28, 2025, when police responded to a reported domestic dispute at the couple's home in the Wilmington area shortly after 11 p.m. Officers found Linda Stevenson unresponsive in the living room. Despite life-saving efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Following an extensive weeks-long investigation, detectives secured the indictment. Police described the charge as stemming from intentional actions during the incident.

Stevenson was previously married to Jill Biden (then Jill Jacobs) from 1970 to 1975. The couple divorced in May 1975, and Jill Biden later married then-Senator Joe Biden in 1977. Stevenson, a Delaware resident, is known locally for founding a popular bar and music hall in Newark in the early 1970s.

Linda Stevenson's obituary described her as a devoted mother and grandmother who had recently started a bookkeeping business. It highlighted her "strength, resilience, and unwavering love for her family and friends."

Authorities have not released additional details about the alleged circumstances or motive, citing the ongoing case. The Delaware Attorney General's office confirmed Stevenson's identity as Jill Biden's former husband but provided no further comment on any potential connection to the Bidens.

This development has drawn national attention due to the historical tie to the former First Lady, though no statements have been issued from Jill Biden or her representatives as of February 4, 2026.

The case remains under investigation, and Stevenson is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
