Kano State to Construct Toll Gates at Seven Key Entry Points to Enhance Security and Boost Economy

 

The Kano State Government has taken a decisive step to bolster security and generate additional revenue by commencing the construction of toll gates on seven major highways leading into the state capital.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf's administration has handed over sites to contractors for the project, which targets key access roads connecting Kano metropolis to neighboring regions and beyond. The selected locations are Daura Road, Katsina Road, Gwarzo Road, Zaria Road, Maiduguri Road, Hadejia Road, and Sa'adatu Rimi Road.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Housing Development, the initiative is designed to improve surveillance of incoming vehicular traffic, thereby reinforcing the state's overall security framework. "The state government has resolved to mount toll gates on all major roads leading into the state metropolis with a view to boosting the security and socio-economic apparatus of Kano State," said Commissioner for Housing Development, Arc. Ibrahim Yakubu Adamu.

The toll gates are expected to serve as strategic checkpoints for documenting and regulating movements, helping to curb potential security threats while creating sustainable revenue streams. Funds generated are slated to support ongoing infrastructural development and other priority areas in the state.

This move comes amid heightened focus on innovative security measures in Kano, including the recent deployment of smart transport systems to monitor public vehicles and enhance road safety.

Stakeholders have welcomed the plan, noting that well-managed toll systems could provide dual benefits of improved security oversight and economic contributions without unduly burdening residents, provided fees are reasonable and transparently utilized.

The project underscores the administration's commitment to proactive governance in addressing both immediate security challenges and long-term economic sustainability in one of Nigeria's most populous and commercially vibrant states.
