LASTMA Cracks Down: 27 Danfo Buses, Private Cars Seized Over Overloading and Safety Breaches

 

(LASTMA) has intensified its crackdown on road safety violations, impounding 27 vehicles—primarily commercial Danfo buses and some private cars—for breaching prescribed loading limits and other safety regulations.

This action stemmed from an early-morning statewide enforcement operation conducted after multiple public warnings and sensitization efforts. The vehicles were found overloaded or otherwise non-compliant, creating hazardous conditions on Lagos roads. LASTMA described such practices as "pervasive and hazardous," emphasizing that overloading endangers passengers, other road users, and contributes to accidents.

According to statements from LASTMA officials, including General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki and Director of Public Affairs Adebayo Taofiq, the impoundments serve as a deterrent. Penalties for these infractions can include vehicle seizure, fines, and potential imprisonment (up to three months in some cases under relevant laws).

The agency urged motorists and commercial operators to comply strictly with loading limits, seatbelt rules, and general safety standards to avoid further enforcement actions.
