Hollywood legend Robert Duvall, the Oscar-winning actor renowned for his unforgettable roles in classics like The Godfather and Apocalypse Now, has passed away at the age of 95.

Duvall died peacefully at his home (a farm) in Middleburg, Virginia, on Sunday, February 15, 2026, surrounded by love and comfort, according to a statement from his wife, Luciana Duvall. No specific cause of death was immediately provided.

Born Robert Selden Duvall on January 5, 1931, in San Diego, California, he built one of the most versatile and respected careers in Hollywood, spanning over seven decades. He became a master of character acting, disappearing into roles that ranged from quiet intensity to explosive charisma.

His breakthrough came with early supporting parts, including Boo Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird (1962) and the deranged Major Frank Burns in MASH* (1970). But it was Francis Ford Coppola's masterpieces that cemented his legacy: as the calm, calculating consigliere Tom Hagen in The Godfather (1972) and its sequel, and as the unforgettable Lt. Col. Bill Kilgore in Apocalypse Now (1979), delivering the iconic line, "I love the smell of napalm in the morning."

In 1983, Duvall won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of a washed-up country singer in Tender Mercies, a role that showcased his ability to convey deep emotion with subtle restraint. He earned additional Oscar nominations for The Great Santini (1979), Apocalypse Now, and The Apostle (1997), which he also wrote and produced. Other notable works include the miniseries Lonesome Dove (earning an Emmy), Network, Falling Down, and The Judge.
