Stop Diversionary Moves, Answer to Probe – DWI Slams El-Rufai

 

The Democracy Watch Initiative (DWI) has urged former Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai to cease what it describes as diversionary tactics and instead focus on addressing serious ongoing investigations by anti-graft and security agencies.

In a statement issued by its Director of Strategic Communication, Dr. Tunji Bamidele, the group stressed that no individual is above the law, amid reports of el-Rufai facing scrutiny from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Department of State Services (DSS).

DWI accused el-Rufai of attempting to shift public attention away from these "grave allegations" through statements and actions that undermine national security institutions. The group specifically highlighted el-Rufai's reported admission of breaching communication protocols with the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), describing it as a concerning disregard for established security procedures.

“As he faces serious investigations by multiple anti-graft and security agencies, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Department of State Services (DSS), el-Rufai’s attempts to divert attention from these grave allegations are not only disingenuous but also pose a significant threat to our national security,” the statement read in part.

The group called on el-Rufai to cooperate fully with the probes rather than engaging in what it termed distractions that could erode public trust in security and anti-corruption bodies.

This development comes amid heightened political tensions involving el-Rufai, including recent criticisms of security officials and claims of politically motivated actions against him and his associates.

DWI reiterated its commitment to promoting accountability, transparency, and respect for democratic institutions in Nigeria.

The former governor has yet to publicly respond to the latest statement from DWI as of February 18, 2026.
