The UK government has strongly condemned Iran's imposition of a 10-year prison sentence

Lindsay and Craig Foreman, both in their 50s and from East Sussex, were arrested in January 2025 while transiting through Iran as part of an around-the-world motorcycle adventure. Iranian authorities accused them of gathering intelligence across various regions of the country, leading to espionage charges that the couple and their family have consistently denied.

The pair have been held in Tehran's notorious Evin Prison—Lindsay in the women's section and Craig in the political wing—since their detention more than 13 months ago. Their trial, which reportedly lasted only three hours on October 27, 2025, before Branch 15 of the Islamic Revolutionary Court, did not allow them to present a defense, according to family statements.

Their son, Joe Bennett, highlighted the procedural flaws and called the proceedings a sham, emphasizing that his parents are effectively being held as hostages.

UK Government's Response

In her statement, Cooper declared:

“This sentence is completely appalling and totally unjustifiable. We will pursue this case relentlessly with the Iranian government until we see Craig and Lindsay Foreman safely returned to the UK and reunited with their family.”

The condemnation aligns with longstanding UK criticism of Iran's use of arbitrary detentions, often viewed internationally as leverage in diplomatic or political disputes. The Foremans' case echoes previous high-profile incidents involving dual nationals or foreign travelers held on similar vague security charges.

No immediate Iranian response to the UK's statement has been reported, but the development is likely to heighten bilateral tensions amid ongoing strained relations.

The family continues to call for urgent consular access and international support to bring the couple home.
