Tragedy on Lagos Highway: Two Killed in Midnight Container Truck Collision at Mile 2

 A devastating collision between two heavily loaded container trucks claimed two lives in the early hours of Thursday along the Oshodi–Apapa Expressway in Lagos.

The incident occurred around midnight at the Cele inward axis near Mile 2, a section frequently plagued by heavy truck traffic linked to Apapa ports.

According to a statement from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), signed by Director of Public Affairs Adebayo Taofiq, the crash involved two 40-foot articulated trucks carrying containers. The impact was severe enough to trap the driver of one vehicle (registration T-392 LA) inside the cab, leading to his death at the scene.

The second fatality was a suspected street urchin found within the operational area of the trucks. Authorities have not yet determined how the individual came to be in harm's way, as details remain under investigation.

LASTMA officials, alongside other emergency services, responded swiftly to the scene, extricating victims, securing the area, and clearing the wreckage to reopen lanes. No additional casualties were confirmed, though the accident caused temporary gridlock in the vicinity.

This latest tragedy underscores persistent safety challenges on the Oshodi–Apapa corridor, including speeding, brake failures, poor vehicle maintenance, and the risks posed by unauthorized persons near heavy-duty vehicles at night.

Road safety advocates have repeatedly called for stricter enforcement of truck movement restrictions, better lighting, and enhanced patrol in high-risk zones.

The bodies have been deposited at a morgue for autopsy, while police continue investigations into the cause of the collision.

Motorists are advised to exercise caution, especially at night, on major Lagos highways known for articulated vehicle movements.
