Tragic Accident at Badagry Roundabout: LASTMA Officer and Two Others Killed by Out-of-Control Dangote Truck

A devastating road accident at the busy Badagry Roundabout, inward Seme along the Badagry–Seme Expressway, claimed the lives of a dedicated Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officer and two other individuals on Monday, February 23, 2026.

The incident involved a fully loaded SHACMAN cement truck reportedly owned by the Dangote Group. According to preliminary investigations by LASTMA and eyewitness accounts, the truck was traveling at excessive speed when it suffered a catastrophic brake failure, causing the driver to lose control. The vehicle veered off its lane, striking the LASTMA officer who was on duty regulating traffic at the roundabout. It then hit a pedestrian (or motorcyclist, per varying reports) at the scene before continuing for about 200 meters and fatally injuring another person.

The victims, including the LASTMA officer performing his lawful duties, died on the spot or were pronounced dead upon arrival at the General Hospital in Badagry. The driver reportedly fled the scene initially but was later apprehended by LASTMA officials and handed over to the police at the Badagry Police Station. Authorities, including the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), LASTMA, and other security agencies, promptly responded to manage the scene, evacuate the bodies, and restore traffic flow.

The Lagos State Government and LASTMA have expressed deep grief over the loss, describing the deceased officer as a committed public servant who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving Lagos residents. The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, and spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq confirmed the details in official statements, emphasizing the role of speeding and brake failure in the tragedy.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns about vehicle maintenance, particularly for heavy-duty trucks, and reckless driving on Lagos highways. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause and ensure justice for the victims' families.
