Why Otti’s re-election bid may be difficult to stop - Opposition

 

Despite mounting opposition from a coalition of former Abia governors (including figures like Orji Kalu, Theodore Orji, and Okezie Ikpeazu) and their loyalists—who have reportedly united to challenge him—political observers argue that stopping Otti's re-election could prove extremely challenging, if not impossible. The primary reason cited is his impressive record of performance in under three years in office (since May 2023).

Otti's administration has shifted the narrative in Abia from one of long-standing decay and mismanagement to visible renewal and hope. Key achievements highlighted include:

Infrastructure renewal: Over 140 road projects initiated or completed, including major rehabilitations like Port-Harcourt Road in Aba, transforming urban areas and boosting economic activity.

Salary and pension reforms: Prompt payment of salaries, clearance of long-standing arrears, and restoration of confidence in public service.

Health sector upgrades: Revival of Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH) in Aba, massive improvements at Abia Specialist Hospital Umuahia, expansion of Amachara General Hospital, retrofitting of over 200 primary healthcare centers, and initiatives like the Abia Electronic Health (E-Health) Project for digitized healthcare records. Abia has been rated number one in primary healthcare in the Southeast, won awards (including $500,000 prizes), and earned commendations from the National Assembly's Health Committee for excellence in reforms.

Education and urban renewal: Significant investments in schools, digital infrastructure (e.g., statewide Wide Area Network), and overall governance efficiency rooted in meritocracy.

Economic and other reforms: Focus on transportation, SME support, smart mass transit, and positioning Aba as an emerging industrial hub. The state has been recognized as the best-performing in the Southeast in 2025 by some metrics.
