Witchcraft Allegation Turns Deadly: Man Kills Brother in Rivers Community, Escapes Arrest

 

The tragic incident occurred in Umunwacha village, Ofeh community, Omuma Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nigeria, around 4 p.m. on Thursday, February 12, 2026.

A middle-aged man named Nwalozie Chiwendu allegedly attacked and killed his brother (reported as his elder brother in some accounts), Chidiebere Isaiah, using a machete (also referred to as a cutlass). The suspect accused the victim of practicing witchcraft, claiming it was responsible for his own lack of progress, stagnation in life, and failures in business or personal success.

According to residents and eyewitness accounts, Chiwendu brutally hacked his brother, leaving the victim in a pool of blood with multiple machete wounds. Upon realizing the severity of his actions, the suspect fled the scene before community members could apprehend him. The victim's body has since been deposited in a mortuary.

The Rivers State Police Command, through its Public Relations Officer, CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident and stated that a manhunt is underway to arrest the fleeing suspect and bring him to justice. Community members have also joined in searching for Chiwendu to ensure he faces the law.

This case highlights the persistent and dangerous issue of witchcraft accusations in parts of Nigeria, which often lead to violence and mob justice, even within families.
