Former NFL First-Round Pick Robert Nkemdiche Arrested in Georgia Grocery Store Incident

 

Former Arizona Cardinals defensive tackle and one-time top NFL draft prospect Robert Nkemdiche was arrested last week following an alleged attempt to leave a Kroger supermarket with concealed grocery items, authorities say. The 31-year-old ex-player was ultimately detained not primarily on shoplifting charges, but due to multiple outstanding warrants from various jurisdictions.

According to a police report obtained by TMZ Sports, an officer conducting a routine business check outside a Kroger store in Georgia observed Nkemdiche exiting the premises with noticeable bulges in his sweatpants. The items appeared to be "many large objects, square and rectangular shapes, consistent with concealed grocery items."

The officer requested backup as Nkemdiche proceeded to a nearby gas station. Upon approach, officers placed the former NFL first-round pick in handcuffs. A subsequent search revealed that the concealed items were no longer in his pants, but frozen grocery products, candy bars, and almond milk were later recovered from the Kroger and gas station parking lots.

The Kroger store declined to press charges for the alleged theft, though it requested that Nkemdiche be permanently trespassed from the premises. Instead, a records check revealed active warrants against him in multiple states, including three in Georgia. Nkemdiche was booked into jail on those outstanding warrants.

This incident marks another brush with the law for Nkemdiche, whose once-promising career has been marked by off-field troubles. The former No. 1 high school recruit in the country and 29th overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals earned nearly $14 million over his professional career but struggled with consistency and injuries. He played sparingly for the Cardinals before stints with the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers, among others. His NFL tenure ended without a return to form, and he has since explored opportunities in other leagues, including the UFL.

In July 2025, Nkemdiche faced a similar allegation when he was arrested in Buford, Georgia, for reportedly attempting to shoplift a $17 bottle of wine from a gas station.

Nkemdiche's representatives have not immediately responded to requests for comment. The case highlights ongoing challenges for the former standout defensive lineman, whose fall from grace has drawn widespread attention in sports circles.

Authorities have not released further details on the status of the warrants or any potential additional charges related to the grocery incident. Nkemdiche was released following processing, but the episode serves as a stark reminder of the difficulties many former athletes face post-career.
