Iran Seeks FIFA Approval to Shift 2026 World Cup Group Games to Mexico Over Security Fears

 Iran's football authorities are actively negotiating with world governing body FIFA to relocate the national team's group-stage matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup from the United States to co-host Mexico, according to statements from the Iranian Embassy in Mexico.

The request stems from heightened security concerns following the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, including US and Israeli military actions against Iran that began in late February. Those strikes reportedly resulted in significant casualties, including the death of Iran's supreme leader and other key figures, escalating tensions and raising doubts about the safety of Iranian players and officials traveling to or competing in the US.

Mehdi Taj, president of Iran's Football Federation, confirmed the discussions in remarks posted on the Iranian Embassy in Mexico's X (formerly Twitter) account. "When [US President Donald] Trump has explicitly stated that he cannot ensure the security of the Iranian national team, we will certainly not travel to America," Taj said. He added: "We are negotiating with FIFA to hold Iran’s World Cup matches in Mexico."

Iran qualified for the expanded 48-team tournament, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, 2026. The Team Melli (Iran's national side) is drawn in a group featuring matches against New Zealand and Belgium in Los Angeles, followed by a game against Egypt in Seattle. Their designated base camp is in Tucson, Arizona.

The embassy's announcement highlighted additional logistical hurdles, including challenges with visa issuance and support from US authorities for the Iranian delegation. Iran's sports minister has previously indicated that participation in the US-hosted portion of the tournament may not be feasible under current conditions, though FIFA has expressed intent to monitor the situation and maintain that qualified teams are expected to compete.

FIFA has not yet issued an official response to the relocation request or provided updates on potential outcomes. Any venue changes for group-stage matches would require approval from the global body, considering the tournament's complex scheduling and host-city allocations.

This development adds to broader uncertainties surrounding regional teams' participation amid the geopolitical fallout, with the tournament still months away but preparations intensifying.
