Neighbour Arrested in Minna for Alleged Rape of 4-Year-Old Girl

 

A man has been arrested by operatives of the Niger State Police Command for the alleged rape of his neighbour's four-year-old daughter in Minna, the state capital.

The suspect, whose identity is being withheld pending further investigation and family privacy considerations, was apprehended following a prompt report by the child's family to the police. Sources close to the investigation revealed that the incident reportedly occurred in a residential compound in one of Minna's neighbourhoods, where the accused and the victim's family reside as neighbours.

According to preliminary police accounts, the child's mother noticed unusual distress and physical signs on her daughter, prompting immediate medical attention at a nearby health facility. Medical examination confirmed evidence consistent with sexual assault, leading to the swift report to authorities.

The Niger State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) confirmed the arrest in a statement, describing the case as "heinous" and assuring that the suspect would face the full weight of the law. "The command is treating this matter with utmost seriousness. The suspect has been taken into custody, and investigations are ongoing to establish all facts surrounding the incident," the PPRO stated.

The victim has been receiving medical care and psychosocial support, with child protection agencies, including the Niger State Child Rights Protection Agency, involved to ensure her well-being and rehabilitation.

This incident has sparked outrage among residents and child rights advocates in Minna, who have called for stricter community vigilance, swift justice, and enhanced measures to protect vulnerable children from sexual predators.

Under Nigerian law, specifically the Child Rights Act (as domesticated in Niger State) and the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, defilement of a child under 18 years is a serious offence punishable by life imprisonment upon conviction.
