"Nigeria in Pain: NLC Calls on Political Leaders to Halt Bloodshed as Eid-el-Kabir Approaches"

 

As Nigerian Muslims prepare to celebrate Eid-el-Kabir, the festival of sacrifice and devotion, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a passionate plea to political leaders to urgently address the worsening wave of violence gripping the nation.

In a statement echoing its longstanding tradition of using religious occasions to spotlight national crises, the NLC described Nigeria as "bleeding" from relentless insecurity, banditry, kidnappings, communal clashes, and targeted attacks that have claimed countless lives and displaced communities. The labour body urged leaders—across federal, state, and local levels—to rise above partisan interests and take decisive action to restore peace, emphasizing that true leadership demands sacrifice, just as the Eid commemorates Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice for faith.

"Nigeria bleeds daily from avoidable violence and bloodshed," the NLC reportedly stated. "As we approach Eid-el-Kabir, a time of reflection, forgiveness, and unity, we call on our political leaders to end this cycle of death and destruction. The spirit of sacrifice should inspire governance that protects lives, not endangers them."

The call comes amid heightened concerns over insecurity during festive periods, when large gatherings and travel often expose vulnerabilities. Recent incidents, including deadly attacks in northern states and ongoing challenges in the Middle Belt and Northwest, have intensified public frustration. The NLC has previously linked insecurity to deeper issues like unemployment, poverty, poor governance, and failure to address root causes, warning that without bold reforms, the nation risks further chaos.

The congress also encouraged citizens, particularly Muslim faithful, to pray fervently for peace while imbibing the Eid values of love, discipline, and mutual respect. It reiterated support for peaceful advocacy and condemned any use of excessive force against protesters demanding better security and living conditions.

As Eid-el-Kabir dawns, the NLC's message serves as a stark reminder: national healing requires collective sacrifice—from leaders ending impunity and violence, to citizens uniting against division. Nigerians await concrete steps to turn these words into lasting peace.
