Nigerian Air Force Officer Arrested Over Alleged Fatal Shooting of Civilian in Port Harcourt Altercation

 

A personnel of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has been arrested in connection with the death of a man during a confrontation at the NAF Harmony Estate along Eliozu Road in Port Harcourt.

The incident occurred around 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 14, 2026, according to security sources and reports from credible outlets.

The arrested officer, identified as LCPL Oton Uba Eli, attached to the 115 Special Operations Group, reportedly apprehended a 28-year-old dispatch rider named David Ebuka over suspected possession of hard drugs.

While the suspect was being detained at the scene, another man—believed to be Ebuka’s superior, identified as Joseph Iche Johnson—arrived and engaged the officer in an argument.

During the heated exchange, the NAF personnel allegedly discharged his firearm, striking Johnson fatally. The victim was rushed to a military hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. His remains were subsequently deposited at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) mortuary for autopsy and preservation.

Both the dispatch rider (Ebuka) and the Air Force officer have been handed over to the police for further investigation. Authorities have confirmed that inquiries are ongoing to determine the full circumstances, including the sequence of events, the justification for the use of force (if any), and any contributing factors.

The Rivers State Police Command is leading the probe, with the case expected to proceed through due process, potentially including charges if evidence substantiates criminal liability.

This development has sparked concerns over interactions between security personnel and civilians in the area, amid ongoing efforts to maintain discipline and accountability within the armed forces.
