Ondo Court Remands Landlady in Custody Over Alleged Poisoning of Tenant’s 3-Year-Old Son

A Magistrate’s Court in Ondo State has remanded a 40-year-old landlady, Nafisat Lateef, in custody over allegations that she poisoned her tenant's three-year-old son following a domestic misunderstanding.

The incident occurred on February 4, 2026, around 8:30 a.m., at Omifon in Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State. According to police reports, Lateef allegedly gave the child, identified as Abdulrasheed, a liquid substance suspected to be poisonous. The act reportedly stemmed from an argument between the suspect and the child's mother, Rofiyat (also spelled Rofiat), aged 32, who is Lateef's tenant.

The mother reported the matter to the Odigbo Police Division on February 5, 2026. Police recovered the alleged poisonous substance during investigations, and the child was rushed to a hospital for treatment, where he received medical attention.

The Ondo State Police Command, through its spokesperson DSP Abayomi Jimoh, confirmed the arrest shortly after the incident in early February 2026. Following completion of investigations, Lateef was charged and arraigned before the magistrate's court.

On Thursday, March 5, 2026, the court ordered her remand in a correctional facility pending further proceedings. The case highlights escalating tensions in landlord-tenant relationships, with authorities emphasizing that the matter remains under judicial process.

This development comes amid other recent landlord-tenant disputes in the same Odigbo area, underscoring the need for peaceful conflict resolution in residential settings.
