Police Arrest Ozoro Festival Chief Organiser, Four Others Over Alleged Sexual Assaults on Women

 

The Delta State Police Command has arrested five individuals, including the chief organiser and community head of the annual Ozoro Festival, in connection with the alleged sexual assault and harassment of young women during the recent event in Oramudu quarters, Ozoro, Isoko North Local Government Area.

The suspects, led by Chief Omorede Sunday—who serves as both the community head and chief organiser of the festival—were apprehended alongside four other individuals from the same quarters. The arrests follow widespread outrage sparked by graphic videos that surfaced online, showing incidents of assault and reported rape during the festival.

Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, confirmed the development on Friday, stating that Commissioner of Police Aina Adesola ordered an immediate investigation upon the videos going viral. The suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further interrogation and prosecution.

"The community head and chief organiser of the event, one Chief Omorede Sunday, and four other suspects from Oramudu quarters in Ozoro have been arrested," Edafe said. "The Commissioner of Police has ordered their immediate transfer to the State CID."

The Delta State Government has strongly condemned the incidents, describing them as barbaric and unacceptable. Authorities have directed swift action to identify and prosecute all culprits involved in the harassment and assaults.

The Ozoro Festival, a traditional cultural event in the Isoko region, has come under scrutiny due to these allegations, with calls for justice and support for the victims. Police investigations are ongoing, and more arrests may follow as efforts continue to ensure accountability.

Disclosing this to newsmen, the command's spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, said four other persons have been arrested over the condemnable incident, which has since gone viral and drawn outrage from the public, including the Delta State government.
