Rapper-Turned-Politician Balendra Shah Poised to Become Nepal's Youngest Prime Minister After Landslide Victory

 

In a historic shift for Nepal's politics, 35-year-old Balendra Shah—better known as "Balen," a former rapper and ex-mayor of Kathmandu—is set to become the country's next Prime Minister following his Rastriya Swatantra Party's (RSP) resounding landslide win in the March 2026 general elections.

The elections, held on March 5, 2026, marked the first parliamentary vote since a massive youth-led uprising in September 2025 toppled the previous government amid widespread protests against corruption, economic stagnation, and poor governance. The Gen Z-fueled revolution, which resulted in dozens of deaths and forced the resignation of veteran leader K.P. Sharma Oli, paved the way for this dramatic change, with voters rejecting traditional parties in favor of fresh, reformist voices.

Shah's RSP, a centrist outfit formed just four years ago, secured a commanding majority in the 275-member House of Representatives. Partial and official results showed the party winning well over 100 of the 165 directly elected seats, with strong leads in proportional representation—potentially delivering one of the largest mandates in Nepal's modern electoral history. Shah himself decisively defeated former Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli in Oli's own constituency of Jhapa-5, garnering 68,348 votes to Oli's 18,734—a margin of nearly 50,000.

Born in 1990, Shah has worn many hats: structural engineer, popular rapper whose lyrics often critiqued Nepal's ruling elite, and independent mayor of Kathmandu since 2022. His pugnacious style on social media, focus on issues like health, education for the poor, infrastructure, youth unemployment, and anti-corruption measures resonated deeply with disillusioned young Nepalis tired of the cycle of unstable coalitions and entrenched political dynasties.

As the RSP's prime ministerial candidate, Shah campaigned on delivering tangible change to Nepal's fragile economy, stemming youth migration abroad, and navigating delicate relations with neighbors India and China. His rise symbolizes a broader generational revolt against the old guard that has dominated Nepali politics for decades.

While formal appointment as Prime Minister awaits the party's official majority confirmation and parliamentary procedures, Shah stands on the brink of becoming Nepal's youngest-ever leader at just 35. This victory not only reshapes the Himalayan nation's political landscape but also highlights the growing power of youth movements in South Asia.
