45-Year-Old Man Arrested on Suspicion of Racist Abuse Towards Sunderland Defender Lutsharel Geertruida During Tyne-Wear Derby

Northumbria Police have arrested a 45-year-old man from the Gateshead area on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence following alleged racist abuse directed at Sunderland defender Lutsharel Geertruida during last month’s Tyne-Wear derby.d70113

The incident occurred on 22 March 2026 during the Premier League clash between Newcastle United and Sunderland at St James’ Park. The match, which Sunderland won 2-1, was briefly paused for around three minutes in the second half after referee Anthony Taylor was informed of discriminatory abuse from the crowd aimed at Geertruida.b59e59

The 45-year-old was arrested on Tuesday and has since been released on police bail pending further enquiries, Northumbria Police confirmed on Wednesday (1 April 2026).a04a87

Both clubs strongly condemned the alleged abuse. Sunderland AFC issued a statement supporting their player, saying they “stand with Lutsharel, who has our complete backing,” and commended him for “displaying bravery and leadership by reporting this incident to the match officials.” Newcastle United also vowed to investigate and take action against those responsible.c8fe1b

The Premier League has previously stated it would fully investigate the matter under its anti-discrimination protocols.

Geertruida, a 25-year-old Dutch international on loan at Sunderland from RB Leipzig, plays primarily as a right-back or centre-back. He has made multiple appearances for the Black Cats this season.

Police described the arrest as part of their ongoing investigation into the reported abuse. A force spokesperson reiterated that all forms of discrimination are condemned and that swift action would be taken against offenders.

This latest development comes amid broader efforts by football authorities, clubs, and law enforcement to tackle discriminatory behaviour in the stands. No further details about the suspect or the exact nature of the alleged abuse have been released.

The investigation continues.
