Former Kano Governor and Ex-Senator Kabiru Gaya Dumps APC, Joins ADC

 

In a fresh political shake-up in Kano State, former Governor of Kano State and ex-Senator Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Gaya, who served as Governor of Kano State in 1992–1993 under the National Republican Convention (NRC) platform during Nigeria’s aborted Third Republic transition, later represented Kano South Senatorial District in the Senate from 2007 to 2023, including his time under the APC from 2015 onwards. A trained architect with degrees from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, he is a veteran politician with decades of experience across multiple parties and regimes.

The resignation, dated April 5, 2026, was communicated in a formal letter addressed to the APC Ward Chairman in Gaya Arewa Ward, Gaya Local Government Area of Kano State. It takes immediate effect.

In the letter, Gaya expressed appreciation for the opportunities the party afforded him, particularly during his senatorial tenure. He wrote:

“I hereby formally tender my resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC) effective today, 5th April 2026. It has been an honour to serve under the platform of the party, particularly during my tenure as a Senator (2015–2023). I remain grateful for the support, trust, and opportunities given to me during this period. However, after careful reflection and wide consultation, I have come to the considered conclusion that it is in the best interest of my constituents and my personal convictions to step aside from the party at this time. I extend my sincere gratitude to the party for the platform it provided me and for the cooperation and camaraderie extended over the years.”30f3d7

Reports indicate that Gaya has defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), adding to the wave of realignments in Kano politics ahead of the 2027 general elections. This move comes amid broader shifts in the state, including recent defections involving Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf (from NNPP to APC), former gubernatorial candidate Nasiru Gawuna, and several lawmakers.

Gaya’s departure is seen as another significant blow to the APC in Kano, a key political battleground, as prominent figures reposition themselves. No detailed reasons beyond personal convictions and constituents’ interests were provided in his letter, and his next political steps within the ADC are yet to be fully outlined publicly.
