Troops Arrest Suspected ISWAP Spy in Yobe's Kanama, Recover Suspicious Items During Counter-Terrorism Operation

 

Nigerian Army troops operating under Operation Hadin Kai have arrested a suspected spy linked to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in the Kanama area of Yunusari Local Government Area, Yobe State.

The suspect, identified in some reports as Malam Fantami (a native of Dikwa in Borno State), was apprehended on or around March 30 by troops of the 159 Battalion in collaboration with members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF). The arrest was based on credible intelligence indicating that he was acting as an informant for terrorists affiliated with ISWAP, potentially providing intelligence or logistical support to insurgent elements in the North-East.

Another recent report from April 2, 2026, identified the suspect as 23-year-old Isah Mahammadu, a native of Kafetowa village in Yunusari LGA. He was arrested at about 3:15 pm on March 30 following a tip-off from the CJTF. During preliminary interrogation, the suspect denied any links to Boko Haram or ISWAP, claiming he was in the community to celebrate Sallah festivities.

Items recovered during the operation include a mobile phone, smartwatch, prayer beads, a motorcycle key, and ₦7,000 in cash (according to multiple security sources). In one account, a small bag containing a mirror, four hand bangles, a torchlight phone, and N3,500 was also mentioned. Preliminary examination of the phone reportedly revealed photographs of motorcycles, large sums of cash, and AK-47 rifles, raising further suspicions about the suspect’s possible role in logistics or intelligence support for terrorists.

Kanama, located near the border with Niger Republic, is often used as a corridor for the movement and supply of insurgent groups operating in the Lake Chad region. The arrest forms part of ongoing counter-terrorism efforts aimed at dismantling the intelligence and logistics networks that sustain groups like ISWAP and Boko Haram in the North-East.

The suspect is currently in military custody and will be handed over to the Military High Command for further interrogation to determine the extent of his involvement and identify possible collaborators.

Security sources described the operation as a significant step in ongoing efforts to secure the region and prevent terrorist activities. No casualties were reported during the arrest.
