IPOB Orders Biafra-Wide Solidarity Lockdown on Feb 2 in Protest Over Onitsha Market Closure, Demands Kanu's Release"

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has declared Monday, February 2, 2026, as a "Biafra-Wide Solidarity Lockdown" or sit-at-home across the South-East region of Nigeria (Anambra, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, and Imo states) and other claimed Biafran territories.

This one-day action calls for a complete shutdown of economic activities, urging traders, transporters, banks, schools, civil servants, and all sectors to remain indoors and refrain from commercial or public operations. IPOB describes it as a peaceful, voluntary protest in solidarity with traders at the Onitsha Main Market, who have faced punitive measures from Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo for observing previous Monday sit-at-home orders.

Background and Reasons

The declaration responds directly to Governor Soludo's recent closure of the Onitsha Main Market for one week (with threats of longer closures, land revocation, demolitions, or repurposing if traders continue complying with sit-at-home observances). IPOB accuses Soludo of "tyrannical" actions and "economic warfare" against the people, allegedly in collaboration with federal interests to suppress the long-standing Monday sit-at-home protest.

The sit-at-home tradition, which began in 2021, is tied to demands for the unconditional release of IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who remains detained amid ongoing legal proceedings related to separatist agitation. IPOB emphasizes that the action is not enforced but a collective expression of solidarity and civil disobedience, denying any link to criminality or economic sabotage.

The statement, issued by IPOB's Media and Publicity Secretary, Comrade Emma Powerful, on January 30, 2026, reads in part:

“The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), under the resolute and prophetic leadership of our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, hereby declares a Biafra-wide solidarity strike, a complete lockdown of all economic activities across Igboland and wider Biafran territories, on Monday, February 2, 2026.”

It further calls on residents to stay peaceful, avoid provocations, and remain vigilant against potential false-flag incidents.
