FIFA President Infantino 'Very Reassured' on Mexico's 2026 World Cup Role Amid Cartel Unrest

 

FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed strong confidence in Mexico's preparations to co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup, stating he is "very reassured" about the country's ability to stage matches despite recent cartel-related violence.

In comments made to AFP on Tuesday in Barranquilla, Colombia, Infantino addressed concerns arising from unrest triggered by the military's killing of Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) leader Nemesio "El Mencho" Oseguera Cervantes. The incident sparked retaliatory attacks, including roadblocks, vehicle burnings, and clashes in several states—particularly in Guadalajara, one of Mexico's host cities for four World Cup matches.

"Very reassured, everything's good. It's going to be spectacular," Infantino said during an event with the Colombian Football Federation. He emphasized that preparations remain on track for the tournament, co-hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada from June 11 to July 19, 2026.

Mexican authorities, including President Claudia Sheinbaum, have echoed this optimism. Sheinbaum assured during a press conference that there is "no risk" to visiting fans, with "all the guarantees" in place for the event. She noted that the situation in Jalisco is "gradually returning to normal" as security forces restore order.

The violence has prompted FIFA to monitor developments closely, amid broader discussions about potential security implications for host venues like Guadalajara (four matches), Mexico City (five matches), and Monterrey (four matches). However, both FIFA and Mexican officials have downplayed any threat to the tournament's schedule or safety for participants and spectators.

This comes amid ongoing concerns about cartel influence in parts of Mexico, but Infantino's remarks signal that organizers view the issue as contained and not a barrier to delivering a successful World Cup.
