Osun Assembly Speaker Leads 24 Lawmakers in Mass Defection from PDP to Accord Party

 The Osun State House of Assembly has witnessed a major political realignment, with Speaker Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun and 24 other lawmakers defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Accord Party.

This development, announced on Friday, February 27, 2026, brings the total number of defecting lawmakers to 25—all of whom were elected on the PDP platform in the previous general elections. The move leaves the 26-member Assembly with only one opposition member: Mr. Femi Popoola of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The defection follows Governor Ademola Adeleke's earlier exit from the PDP to the Accord Party in December 2025. Sources indicate that the lawmakers' decision stems from a desire to align closely with the governor, consolidate his political base, and advance the collective interests of Osun State's people while sustaining ongoing development initiatives.

In a statement confirming the shift, the Speaker's spokesperson, Olamide Tiamiyu, noted that the 25 PDP-elected members have formally joined the Accord Party, with further details expected soon. The lawmakers described the move as resulting from deep reflection, extensive consultations with supporters, political associates, and key stakeholders.

This mass defection significantly strengthens the Accord Party's position in the state legislature ahead of future electoral contests, including the governorship poll.
