PenCom Data: Pension Funds' Infrastructure Exposure Jumps 48% to N262.6 Billion in 2025

 

Nigerian pension funds have demonstrated a strong commitment to national development, with investments in infrastructure funds surging by 48.1% year-on-year to N262.567 billion in the 10 months ended October 2025.

Data released by the National Pension Commission (PenCom) reveals that Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs) allocated N262.567 billion to infrastructure funds during the period, up significantly from N177.236 billion in the same period of 2024. This growth highlights the increasing appeal of infrastructure as a long-term, stable asset class for retirement savings.

Further bolstering the sector, investments in corporate infrastructure bonds rose sharply by 130%, from N15.916 billion to N36.609 billion, signaling greater confidence in debt instruments tied to real infrastructure projects.

The uptick forms part of a broader diversification strategy encouraged by PenCom, which has revised investment regulations in recent years to allow higher allocations to alternatives such as infrastructure, private equity, and real estate. These moves aim to reduce heavy reliance on traditional assets like Federal Government securities while channeling pension capital toward productive sectors that drive economic growth and job creation.

Nigeria faces an estimated annual infrastructure funding gap of billions of dollars, particularly in power, roads, rail, and urban development. Pension funds, with their long-term horizon and growing pool of assets (totaling N26.66 trillion as of October 2025), are increasingly positioned as a vital domestic source of patient capital to help close this gap.

Analysts view the 48.1% growth as a positive indicator of maturity in the pension industry and a step toward sustainable development financing. Continued regulatory support and attractive risk-adjusted returns are expected to sustain this momentum in the coming years.
