Historic Milestone: President Bola Tinubu Begins First Nigerian State Visit to UK in 37 Years, Hosted by King Charles at Windsor Castle

 Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu have arrived in the United Kingdom for a landmark two-day state visit (March 18–19, 2026), the first by a Nigerian head of state in 37 years.

This historic occasion — the first Nigerian state visit to the UK since 1989 and the first incoming state visit by a Muslim leader during Ramadan in nearly a century — underscores deepening bilateral ties between Africa's most populous nation and its former colonial power. King Charles III and Queen Camilla are hosting the couple at Windsor Castle, with full royal pomp including an honour guard, ceremonial welcomes, and a state banquet in St George’s Hall attended by senior royals, including the Prince and Princess of Wales.

President Tinubu departed Abuja on Tuesday, March 17, and touched down at Stansted Airport before proceeding by motorcade to Windsor. He was received with traditional British pageantry, including preparations involving security sweeps, road closures, and rehearsals. Early highlights on Day 1 include a warm welcome by Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, followed by engagements with King Charles and Queen Camilla.

The visit focuses on strengthening economic cooperation, trade, investment, security, migration, cultural exchange, and climate issues. Analysts expect discussions on Nigeria’s economic reforms, port renovations in Lagos, and opportunities for UK businesses in Africa’s largest economy. It also includes engagements with the Nigerian diaspora in the UK.

This is not President Tinubu’s first interaction with the British monarchy; he met King Charles at Buckingham Palace in September 2024. However, the formal state visit elevates the relationship to the highest ceremonial level, last seen with Nigerian leaders in the 1970s and 1980s.
