Iran Retaliates with Missile and Drone Strikes on U.S. Fifth Fleet HQ in Bahrain Amid Escalating Conflict

The dramatic events unfolding in the Middle East have escalated sharply, with Iran launching missile and drone strikes on February 28, 2026, targeting the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet headquarters in Manama, Bahrain, among other sites. This appears to be a direct retaliatory response to prior U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iranian targets, which reportedly included the killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and strikes on Revolutionary Guard facilities.

Bahrain's government confirmed that a missile attack struck the Fifth Fleet's service center, describing it as a violation of national sovereignty. Emergency response teams were deployed, and air defense systems intercepted many incoming projectiles—Bahrain's Defence Force reported successfully downing 45 missiles and 9 drones, including Shahed-136 types. Videos circulating online show explosions, thick black smoke rising near the base, and impacts in the vicinity, including near residential areas and possibly off-base buildings. Some footage depicts a drone striking close to the headquarters, with sirens blaring across Manama.

No U.S. servicemembers were reported killed or wounded in the Bahrain strikes, according to U.S. military statements, though the full extent of damage remains unclear. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility, framing the attacks as retaliation against joint U.S.-Israeli operations. The strikes extended beyond Bahrain to other U.S.-allied sites hosting American forces, including bases in Kuwait (Ali al-Salem), Qatar (Al Udeid), the UAE (Al Dhafra), and Jordan.

This marks a significant escalation in regional tensions, raising concerns about air defense vulnerabilities at key U.S. installations and prompting evacuations or authorized departures for military families in Bahrain. Bahrain and other Gulf states have condemned the attacks as unjustified violations of sovereignty.
