Iranian Retaliatory Strikes Hit UAE Airports: One Killed, Seven Injured in Abu Dhabi; Four Hurt at Dubai International Amid Regional Escalation

Iranian missile and drone attacks in retaliation for prior US-Israeli strikes have targeted key sites across the United Arab Emirates, causing casualties and widespread disruption to aviation and landmarks.

In Abu Dhabi, authorities confirmed an "incident" at Zayed International Airport resulting from intercepted Iranian projectiles. Falling debris led to one fatality — an Asian national — and seven injuries, according to Abu Dhabi Airports' statement on X. The UAE Ministry of Defence reported intercepting 137 ballistic missiles and 209 drones nationwide, preventing larger-scale damage.

At Dubai International Airport (DXB), the world's busiest for international passengers, a concourse sustained minor damage in what Dubai's media office described as a quickly contained incident. Four staff members were injured, with emergency teams responding immediately. Aviation sources indicated terminal damage from overnight attacks, prompting the indefinite suspension of all flights in and out of DXB and Al Maktoum International (DWC). Smoke was reported in parts of the facility, leading to evacuations.

The strikes extended to civilian-adjacent sites, including debris igniting a minor fire on the iconic Burj Al Arab hotel's facade and explosions near Palm Jumeirah and Jebel Ali Port. UAE officials emphasized that most incoming threats were neutralized by air defenses.

The attacks follow the reported killing of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in earlier strikes, escalating tensions across the Gulf. Airlines have canceled hundreds of flights, stranding passengers and disrupting global travel. Regional powers, including Qatar and Bahrain, reported similar explosions and disruptions.

UAE authorities urged calm and warned against spreading unverified rumors, while reaffirming the nation's resilience. No further casualties were immediately reported from other sites, though the situation remains fluid with ongoing monitoring.

This marks an unprecedented spillover of the conflict into major commercial hubs, raising concerns over civilian safety and economic impacts in the oil-rich region.
