Kevin Spacey Faces New Civil Lawsuit Allegations of Sexual Assault Dating Back Nearly 50 Years

 

Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey is once again at the center of serious sexual misconduct claims, as three British men have filed civil lawsuits in London's High Court accusing him of sexual assaults spanning more than two decades. In a pre-trial hearing this week, the claimants sought to introduce evidence from additional accusers, including one allegation from the late 1970s—pushing the timeline of purported incidents back nearly 50 years.

The three primary claimants allege that Spacey, now 66, sexually assaulted them between 2000 and 2013. Two of the men previously provided testimony during Spacey's 2023 criminal trial in London, where a jury acquitted him of nine counts of sexual assault. Spacey has consistently denied all allegations of wrongdoing and has formally denied two of the three new civil claims, with no public response yet issued regarding the third.

During Tuesday's High Court proceedings, lawyers for the claimants argued for the inclusion of testimony from seven other men who have made similar accusations against Spacey. These additional accounts reportedly include one from the late 1970s, two from the late 1990s, and four from the 2000s and 2010s. The judge has yet to rule on whether this "similar fact" evidence will be admitted at the upcoming trial.

A provisional trial date has been set for October 12, 2026, though it remains unclear whether the cases will proceed as a single consolidated hearing or as three separate trials. The claimants are seeking damages for alleged psychiatric harm, emotional distress, and related financial losses.

Spacey's legal troubles began in 2017 when actor Anthony Rapp publicly accused him of making an unwanted sexual advance in 1986, when Rapp was 14 and Spacey was 26. That allegation triggered a cascade of claims from dozens of men—over 50 in total, according to some reports—spanning decades and ranging from inappropriate touching to more serious assaults. Many of the accusers described incidents occurring while Spacey served as artistic director of London's Old Vic Theatre from 2004 to 2013.

Despite these acquittals, the fresh civil suits highlight the persistence of allegations against the once-celebrated star of films like The Usual Suspects and American Beauty, and the Netflix series House of Cards. The actor's career largely collapsed after the initial 2017 claims, leading to his dismissal from projects and a prolonged absence from mainstream Hollywood.

Spacey has maintained his innocence throughout, describing some accusations as politically motivated or fabricated. In recent interviews, he has spoken about the personal and professional toll, including periods of financial hardship and limited work opportunities. He has appeared in smaller independent productions and an Italian comedy series in late 2025.

The High Court civil trial, expected later this year, will unfold under a lower burden of proof than criminal proceedings—"balance of probabilities" rather than "beyond reasonable doubt"—potentially allowing for a different outcome even in light of prior acquittals.

Legal experts note that civil cases like this can serve as a platform for accusers to seek accountability and compensation when criminal thresholds are not met. For Spacey, the ongoing litigation continues to cast a long shadow over any prospects of rehabilitation in the entertainment industry.
